How Much Does a Process Server Cost in Australia?
Short answer: for a standard personal service in an Australian capital city, expect $220 to $400 plus GST, including up to three attendances and a sworn affidavit of service. Regional jobs run $400 to $1,000 depending on travel and remoteness*. Interstate service is typically $400 to $500*. International service starts around $1,000*.

Most of the pages that come up when you search this question are American. They quote figures of $40 to $150 that reflect US conditions, US court rules and US fuel prices, and they are no use to you if the person needs to be served in Bentleigh. Here is what it actually costs in Australia, what should be included, and how to tell a fair quote from a bad one.
What you are actually paying for
A process server is not a courier. The product is not the delivery — it is the affidavit of service: a sworn document that holds up when the other side tells the court they never received anything.
A standard metropolitan job means reading the documents and identifying the correct legal entity, travelling to the address, attending at times a person is actually likely to be home (which usually means early morning, evening or weekend), confirming the identity of the person who answers the door, and then preparing and swearing an affidavit recording the date, time, place and a description of the person served. Three attendances at a suburban address is comfortably half a day’s work once travel is counted.
That is why a quote of $80 should worry you rather than please you. A service that fails, or an affidavit that a lawyer can pick apart, costs far more than the difference in fee — usually an adjournment and a second attempt against a deadline that has moved closer.

These are market ranges observed across Australian providers, not a quote. Any competent server will give you a fixed price before starting.
What the court itself says a service is worth
This is the figure almost nobody publishes, and it is the most useful number on this page.
The Magistrates’ Court of Victoria publishes a scale of professional costs that a successful party can claim from the other side. Effective 1 January 2026, that scale allows:
- Service — $180 with 3 attempts
- Travel allowance — $0.85 per kilometre
- Urgent — $120 extra
Read those as the court’s view of what is reasonable, not as a retail price list. But do the arithmetic, because it explains the market.
Can you claim the cost back?
In a civil claim, service costs are ordinarily recoverable as a disbursement if you succeed, though usually at the scale rate rather than the amount you actually paid. In family law, each party generally bears their own costs, so a divorce applicant should expect to wear the fee. For a business, process serving fees connected to income-producing activity are generally deductible — confirm the treatment of your particular matter with your accountant rather than assuming.
Ask about GST, and five other things
Ask whether the quoted figure includes GST. On a $300 job that is a $30 difference, and it is the most common cause of a pricing dispute in this industry. Then ask:
- How many attendances are included in the price?
- What does a fourth attendance cost?
- Is travel charged per kilometre, or built into the fee?
- Is the affidavit of service included, or billed separately?
- If the address turns out to be wrong, is the job still billable?
A server who cannot answer those five questions in one email is a server who will surprise you on the invoice.
The cheaper options, honestly
Not every document needs a professional.
If you have filed a sole application for divorce, you cannot serve the documents on your spouse yourself — but any person over 18 can do it on your behalf, including a relative or a friend. The Federal Circuit and Family Court also allows service by post, where your spouse signs an Acknowledgment of Service and returns it. If they are cooperative, that costs the price of a stamp and it is the correct route.
Where it falls apart is when they do not sign, do not answer, or have moved without telling anyone. By then you have lost several weeks against a hearing that must be served at least 28 days in advance, and you are hiring someone anyway — now urgently, at the urgent rate. If there is any history of avoidance, the cheap option was never the cheap option.
